One of the strongholds of Modi’s government is providing opportunities for everyone to travel. He created a system called LPSK (Local Passport Seva Kendra) or Local Passport office where you don’t have to travel long distances to get your passport done making it easier to acquire a passport.
The physical police verification that delayed the process by atleast 3 days as Indian government still works on physical paper. The passport office would send papers to the local police station to verify the address of the individual. At the police station a special officer whose job was to visit citizen’s home and get atleast two references (usually neighbor’s ) to verify that citizen is legally the resident of the said home. There was a plan in 2018 that passport process would become online.
Remember, the following is only true for a regular passport. Tatkal passport would still require signature of TI of your local police station.
Somehow, the government has been able to enable the system a month prior and now citizen can get their passport within a week of applying vs earlier two to four weeks process. Hopefully, they can create e-passports and get rid of the hassle for Indian citizens. Feels like that day is still little far away.
