JW Marriott has just come to town and my Kolkatta is simply gushing over the new arrival. Apparently, it’s added a new twist to luxury by hooking it up with technology to create a very “modern hotel”.
Rave reviews have been all over the place intriguing yours insincerely enough to finally grace the place with his presence last week.
After all, it is basically across the road from the hotel I’m going to have my heart, ITC Sonar.
This report will be divided into two parts, the first focusing on the club room and the second a mesmerizing review of the suite room.
As I arrived at the hotel, the duty manager, Ms. Annete was there to personally welcome me. I was given the traditional Indian welcome with tikka, towels and a welcome beverage.
I was told that hotel has literally just begun and they didn’t have a suite available for me that day. I was a little bit disappointed as I was planning to hold few meetings while I was there. However, the check-in process was quick and efficient in allocating me a top club room.
As I looked around the hotel, it felt very modern indeed with a lot of light everywhere.
It feels luxurious if not royal but then again, not everyone can be ITC Sonar. Room no.702 was my abode for the first day.
As I entered the room, it was an average size club room.
There was an inviting king size bed in front of me with an ottoman next to it. The bed felt even more decadently comfortable and fluffier than the eye could have imagined. The surroundings were spotless.
The switchboard was very modern and for some reason, I have a fetish for a switchboard that feels as digital as our smartphone era rather than old school ‘dumb” hardwood.
Guess that’s the geek in me rising from the subconscious. There was a small couch at the end of the room which could seat two people.
I found the couch pretty small but tolerable.Maybe they want to encourage a bit more intimacy between whoever sits over there without explicitly saying it out loud.Too bad I live to live free.
The view outside was pretty green.. I can imagine simply staring at the landscape for hours at an end.
Right next to the couch was a study table. I love the location of the table as you can sit there and effortlessly get yourself into work mode.
The washroom was on the opposite side of the bed. There was a huge sliding door that opened into the large sink. Now that was a view!
The sink unit was a large one with a single sink and lots of towels. There is a unique charm to the wooden casing there.
There was a separate enclosed unit for the toilet on the left. I love that. A bidet spray as expected was there as well.
The bath area was just one of the best I have ever seen. The architecture was sleek yet unimposing. There is a huge cabin which has a rainforest shower with an interconnected soaking tub.
Combine all this with the view from the bath was a special experience indeed. The green natural landscape was a refreshing experience indeed.
The toiletries were provided by Aroma Therapy. The bottles felt very premium and big. I wasn’t expecting such large bottles. The fragrance was top end too. They surely are pulling in all the stops here.
The Fitness center here is a dream. Its almost like there is a huge floor that has everything related to equipment. All the equipment is modern and there is so much equipment present here.
I don’t think you would miss your workout regimen here as the gym is pretty state of the art here. Cardio equipment is top of the line too. There is TV attached and the view from the equipment is nice too.
The Swimming pool outside had an infinity pool and I just love them. They just make me want to jump into them like I am twelve years old again.
Food and Beverage
I was expecting too much in Food and Beverages department from this hotel
JW Marriott treats lounge very differently from SPG hotels do. This hotel had a 24-hour lounge where Platinum members could come anytime and conduct their meetings. They had some snacks and beverages all day long. However, in the evening there was a different menu with hot items to it. Evening hours is when they serve you liquor too.
The lounge itself is a large space across the lobby. It is the very comfortable place to hold meetings.
You can see both day snacks and evening hour
I had too many expectations from JW Marriott when it came to food. I was coming from ITC Sonar, and I was hoping like rest of Kolkata, this place would also wow me. I got great food even from The Park Kolkata where I went in with zero expectations.
JW Marriott does have a huge spread. However, most of the breakfast is continental and not local.
They have a massive cereal bar, so many types of yogurt, various types of bread, waffles, pancakes, etc. I was impressed.
However, It was nowhere near the level of ITC Sonar when it comes to culinary excellence. There was no local flavor to it. I didn’t think the Head Chef was very creative either. It was just a lot of food, and you are not going home hungry. However, this is not a dazzling show. If you are into English breakfast with a sweet tooth, this might be the place for you. However, if you are planning to find any local flavor, you would be sorely be disappointed.
Overall, I found the staff to be courteous and available around the clock. Even calling them in middle of the night, they were trying to be helpful. Everyone from Duty Manager to House Keeping did phenomenal work.
How do I feel about JW Marriott Kolkata? I feel the property is not fully functional yet and it’s premature to fully evaluate them. It looks pretty glamorous, and there are so many things that I love about this property like the Lounge area and nice staff. However, it doesn’t have the same charm and exceptional level of service as ITC Sonar. ITC is far superior when it comes to food and comfort. JW Marriott feels packed like a traditional hotel while ITC feels like a twenty-first-century palace and is really expansive in size. Both of them are priced similarly and hence I would always lean towards ITC. However, for the people who prefer modern day hotels and western breakfast, this is the hotel to stay.
