Those offers even dictate the brand loyalty for travel hackers. IHG offer is so horrible that I am not interested in staying with them this year.

Coming onto Marriott and Starwood, since Marriott has acquired Starwood, both the companies have been launching offers together on same day. Slowly, my stays are changing as I would write more about that soon. The great part is that new offer starts very next day the current one expires from January 16. 2018 to March 31, 2018.

Marriott Megabonus Promotion

Marriott MegaBonus

Marriott’s first MegaBonus in 2018 will allow members to earn bonus points beginning from their second stay.  This round of MegaBonus will give Marriott Rewards members an opportunity to earn:

  • 2,000 bonus points per stay from the second stay onwards
  • Additional 1,000 bonus points on weekend night stay

Weekend nights include Friday and Saturday nights and include Thursday and Friday nights in the Middle East. This offer is valid for all stays from January 16 through April 15, 2018, and you must register by March 31, 2018.

The maximum number of points that can be earned through this offer is capped at 50,000 bonus points per account.

*A ‘stay’ is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity.

In simpler words, the offer is valid only if you stay 2 nights in a row with them.

SPG Great Weeks Grand Weekends

SPG last promotion is still very lucrative and I used it to the full extent to maximize my stays. It wasn’t like 2016 where I had major mattress run.

In this offer, you will earn 2x points for your stays of during the week. You would earn additional 500 Starpoints if you stay on a weekend night. In Middle East, weekend nights would be considered Thursday and Friday whereas rest of the world, it would be Friday and Saturday (NOT SUNDAY).

The good part about the promotion is that single night stays would count and hence making all the stays 2x stays.

Which offer would I select?

On merits, I prefer Marriott’s offer as I am getting straight 2000 points for staying at any property they own in their program and making it 3000 if I stay on weekends. Technically that becomes SPG previous offer like Explore more but requires to stay 2 nights instead of 1.

So unless you are staying in the high-end property and spending some real money, 2x offer won’t amount to much.
