IHG’s revamped PointBreaks promotion

This is a promotion they’ve been offering on a quarterly basis for years, which allows you to book select hotels for just 5,000 points per night. Given that I value IHG points at 30 paise each, that’s the equivalent of paying Rs 1500 per night for a room, which is a steal.

The issue is that the quality of the hotels on the lists has been gradually decreasing over the years, to the point that many of us don’t even bother trying with the promotion anymore. It’s great if you happen to be traveling to somewhere that has a PointBreaks hotel, but otherwise, it’s just not worth going out of your way to stay at one, in my opinion.

IHG has announced that they’re changing up the PointBreaks promotion, and more specifically, hotels will cost 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 points per night going forward. IHG is promising that they’ll offer more hotels than in the past, and presumably higher quality hotels as well.

The next PointBreaks list has just gone live, and is valid for stays through April 30, 2018. The better hotels tend to sell out pretty quickly (as there are capacity constraints), so you’ll want to book sooner rather than later.

You can also use Cash & Points this time around

In the past PointBreaks hotels cost 5,000 points per night, though now that some hotels cost 10,000 and 15,000 points per night, you can redeem part points and part cash for these bookings, to lower the price by 5,000 to 10,000 points per night. The price varies by property, but typically you can expect to pay about Rs 3200 to lower the cost by 5,000 points, and to pay Rs 5120 to lower the cost by 10,000 points.

A first glance at the list and I can already see about 10 InterContinental hotels participating and quite a few Crowne Plaza properties are in the mix as well.
